From Fields to Freedom with
LTPCT’s Second Chance Programme
- 26 December 2025
Urmila Gurunath Kothe, fondly known as ‘Tai,’ is a 29-year-old mother of two from Viramgad Sakhare. Married young, her life revolved around long hours in the fields and caring for her family, leaving her dreams of education behind. But LTPCT’s Second Chance Programme reignited her aspirations, offering women like her a chance to complete their Class 10 Maharashtra State Board exams and transform their lives.
Balancing her household duties and farm work, Urmila attended classes from 12 to 3 pm, determined to reclaim her identity. Her first milestone was learning to sign her name, ending years of dependence on others for important documents. She even taught her 50-year-old mother-in-law to sign, sharing the empowerment she’d gained.
Beyond academics, Urmila gained digital literacy, learning to navigate WhatsApp, which became essential for her new role as village Co-ordinator of the Gram Panchayat. Overseeing 19 hamlets, she conducts surveys, ensures government schemes reach the villagers, and provides last-mile support. Her irrigation solutions lift farm ponds and destinies. This journey transformed not just her skills but her confidence. Once confined to traditional spaces, Urmila now commands high regard across 19 hamlets and inspires her children. Her eldest now aspires to lead his nation, envisioning a career as a doctor — a goal that once felt impossible. Urmila’s story is a testament to the power of education. With her newfound independence and vision, she inspires her community to believe in second chances and the ability to dream again.
